But, now I had a person and a voice connected to those letters that had been written to me so many times before, and now I had a picture of all of us. Together.
So, to the men who told me I couldn’t and to the people who told me I’m not worthy, I have only five words for you: I’m not less than you.
I hope that there will be more acknowledgement of trauma and emotional confusion that is so prevalent among adoptees. I hope it shows that children have a lot more insight than may be perceived.
Because without listening, we won’t hear, and without hearing, we won’t grow, and without growth, we won’t change. So, listen.
I easily fell into that way of thinking, equating my lack of interest in boys to thinking I wasn’t ready for them; I was too immature or had other interests that required my attention. I believed I must just be a late bloomer.
No one is perfect. It’s what makes us beautiful and unique. It’s the imperfections that create stories, laughter and memories. It’s the mistakes that help us learn and grow. It’s what makes humans, human.
